Prof R Jayakumar

Dr. R. Jayakumar is an Environmental Scientist and academician with over 24 years of professional experience in research, teaching, and academic administration. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (MoEF&CC, Government of India). He has served as Professor and Dean in reputed institutions including Kalinga University, Vivekanandha Arts and Science College, and GITAM University. His research focuses on environmental toxicology, heavy metal contamination, and ecological risk assessment. Dr. Jayakumar has published several research papers in Scopus-indexed journals, secured funded research projects, and contributed to policy, teaching innovation, and sustainability initiatives in higher education.

Dr. R. Jayakumar’s research focuses on environmental science, ecotoxicology, and sustainable environmental management. His key research interests include:

  1. Environmental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology – studying the effects of pollutants and contaminants on ecosystems and wildlife.

  2. Heavy Metal Contamination and Biomonitoring – assessment of metal pollution in aquatic systems, birds, fishes, and environmental samples.

  3. Biomarkers in Environmental Monitoring – use of biochemical and molecular indicators to detect environmental contamination.

  4. E-waste Toxicology and Environmental Risk Assessment – evaluation of ecological impacts of electronic waste and associated pollutants.

  5. Environmental Pollution and Public Health – studying the impact of environmental contaminants on human health and ecosystems.

  6. Wildlife and Avian Ecotoxicology – monitoring environmental pollutants in birds and wildlife species.

  7. Waste Management and Sustainable Environmental Practices – recycling, solid waste management, and sustainable environmental technologies.

  8. Climate Change, Environmental Monitoring, and Sustainability Studies.

  1. Recycling of old wastepaper with ITC under Well-being out of Waste (WoW).  - Cleared 1.5 tonnes of (2010-11), 3.3 tonnes (2011-13) and 2 tonnes (2014-15) of paper waste. It saved 200 trees and helped in educating thirty poor students by donating the same volume of recyclables.  It saves 87.2 KL of water, 3.01 CO2 Reduction, 1509 Energy savings and 3.7 cubic Mt. of land fill space.
